In the late 1940s the Pirelli rubber company had been experimenting with foam rubber for automobile seats. Pirelli approached Marco Zanuso to design chairs using the new materials and utilising mass-production techniques rather than traditional craft-based production. The arms, seat and back of the Lady armchair were made from foams of different firmness, upholstered, then assembled into a complete chair; yet the effect was of a custom upholstered chair.
Lady armchair can almost be called the symbol of an era: it marks the advent of modernity to the world of upholstered furniture in the early Fifties. In its manufacturing technique and in its styling, Lady is an emblematic expression of the renewal that traditional furnishings were undergoing at the time.
