This table (Militaire kruk in Dutch) is a part of the serie designed for the interior of the Catholic Military Academie in Utrecht. Unlike previous experimental furniture designs (such as the Red/Blue chair), the contact called less for a programmatic statement on chairs and more for stability, lightness and lowest possible production cost.
As you can see from the joints between the legs and stretchers, Rietveld obviously designed this table in the same style as the military chair. The table top is not connected directly to the longitudinal stretchers but to narrow crosspieces above them, this creates a light spatious construction. Rietveld began experimenting with this type of spatial constuction in a table for the house of B. de Ligt in 1918.
The military stool was constructed in the same manner as the military chair and military table. It was executed in various colors: black and white, as well as various shades of gray. Metz and Co. in Amsterdam was the first company to sell the 'Military line' of Rietveld furniture.
